David Marshall (Singaporean politician)

David Saul Marshall (12 March 1908 – 12 December 1995) was a Singaporean politician and lawyer who served as Singapore's first Chief Minister from 1955 to 1956. He was the founder of Workers' Party of Singapore, one of the two dominant parties in Singapore. He served as the president of the party, which was the highest post before the creation of the secretary-general. He was also instrumental in the negotiations leading up to the independence of Malaya.
==Early life==
Marshall was born in 1908 into a Baghdadi Jewish family based in Singapore. His family name was originally Mashal but was anglicised to become Marshall. His brother, Joseph Saul, died in 1945 in Sydney, Australia under odd circumstances which were potentially connected to the Taman Shud Case.
